Follow Your Bliss

Joseph Campbell, a well-known mythologist, writer, and teacher, coined the phrase, "follow your bliss." Honoring your inner calling is at the heart of this idea. According to Campbell, everyone has an inner calling that aligns with their authentic self.

How do you find your inner calling? Following your bliss is not simply doing what is 'fun or easy.’ You need to take time to listen to your heart and intuition, so that your choices reflect and honor your unique path. Live authentically and find meaning in what you do and what calls you toward wholeness. Find what makes you feel most alive, fulfilled, and deeply happy — even if it's not what society, family, or others expect of you. It's about what feels deeply right, authentic, and aligned with your soul.

"Do what makes you feel most alive, fulfilled, and deeply happy.

even if it's not what society, family, or others expect of you."

-- Joseph Campbell

The main message is: to live authentically and fulfilled, discover and commit to what gives your life true meaning, even if it looks different than what is expected of you. How can you honor this process of finding and following your bliss?

Choosing a Path that Feels Alive to You—Even if it Scares You.

Following your bliss takes courage, especially if the path feels risky or unconventional. It is ultimately about what feels most authentic to you.

  • Someone who loves art but studied business because it seemed 'practical' might choose to open a small art studio anyway, because painting fills them with joy and meaning.

  • A person in a corporate job who feels dead inside decides to teach yoga because that's what they've always loved.

  • Your bliss is not always "safe" or "logical,"  but it calls you toward wholeness.

What Lights You Up?

When you're following your bliss, you notice what gives you a sense of flow— where you lose track of time, feel energized, and deeply satisfied. Even if these don't make you rich or famous, they are worth prioritizing.

  • Writing stories, even though no one requested them.

  • Working in a garden and feeling at peace.

  • Traveling to remote places and feeling alive in the unknown.

Trust that Life Will Support You When You Align with Your True Self.

According to Campbell, following your bliss brings moments when, as he puts it, "doors will open where there were not doors before." Taking steps toward your unique purpose often leads to encounters with the right people, opportunities, or synchronicities at the perfect time.

Remember, following your bliss isn't just about pleasure—it's about living a life that feels deeply meaningful and authentic to you.

Bliss is not just about feeling good in the moment. It's what feels deeply right and meaningful, aligning with your true self.

  • A parent raising children out of love — hard, tiring work, yet profoundly fulfilling.

  • An activist fighting for justice, even though it's challenging.

  • A spiritual seeker going through trials on the way to awakening.

Bliss may include struggle, but it's meaningful. You don’t have to make dramatic changes overnight. Small, consistent steps—like taking an hour to write or enrolling in a class you love—can transform your trajectory.

Practical and gentle ways to start aligning with your bliss.

Pay Attention to What Lights You Up

At the end of each day, jot down 1-2 moments when you felt alive, joyful, or deeply satisfied, no matter how small.

  • When you were helping someone solve a problem.

  • When you were cooking and lost track of time.

  • When you were outside and felt at peace.

Make a "Bliss List"

  • Sit quietly. Write a list of 10-15 things you love to do, even if you haven't done them in years.

  • Think about childhood joys, hobbies, skills, places, even moods (like "feeling free" or "feeling useful.")

  • Then circle 1-2 things and include them in your life more this week.

Schedule Bliss Time

Block out 30-60 minutes a week (to start) to focus on what brings you joy, guilt-free.

Treat it like a sacred appointment.

  • Paint for no reason.

  • Visit a park and do nothing.

  • Take yourself to a museum.

  • Play music.

  • Call someone who makes you laugh.

Tune Into Your Body's Signals

  • As you face decisions, big or small, pause and ask: Does this feel expansive and light, or heavy and contracted?

  • Your body often knows before your mind. Bliss feels light, open, and alive — even if it also feels scary.

Notice and Follow Little Curiosities

Next time something sparks your curiosity or excites you, take one step toward it. Bliss often begins as a whisper.

  • Read that book you keep thinking about.

  • Take a class on something you've always wondered about.

  • Strike up a conversation about a topic that excites you.

Surround Yourself with Inspiration

Inspiration makes it easier to trust your path.

  • Spend time with people, books, art, or places that remind you of what's possible. Focus on what you love about life.

Reflect on What You Want to Feel

Pay attention to what feeling you want more of—freedom, peace, joy, creativity, connection, or meaning.

  • Ask yourself each day, "What's one thing I can do today that moves me closer to that feeling?" This self-reflection helps you stay true to your bliss.

You don’t need to have everything figured out to begin. Bliss is not a destination but a way of walking your path—step by step, choice by choice. Small actions can add immense joy and fulfillment, guiding you forward.

The photo at the top shows how I look and feel when I follow my bliss. Recently, I had been working a lot and was feeling burned out. One morning, I woke up, and the first Spirit message I received was to take a "vacation day" and go to the natural hot springs. I did not argue or convince myself that I had too much work. Instead, I quickly prepared to leave early so I would have the whole day to rest and relax.

It was a great day. As I sat in the pool, closed my eyes, and took a few deep breaths, I began meditating while the sun gently beamed on my face. I was surprised at how quickly I got into a deep meditative state, given that there were many other people in the pool, talking and splashing. So there I was, surrounded by people and noise, basking in the beauty and awe of the moment.

I would love for you to share some of the ways you follow your bliss.

Divine Companions: Spirit Guides

Are you aware that Divine companions surround you all the time? They are there, doing their best to guide and keep you safe. Before you were born this lifetime, Spirit chose them to accompany you through your lifetime, from the moment of your first breath, until your last.

What is a Spirit Guide?

These highly evolved beings have completed the cycle of birth and death in the physical plane and are now serving as teachers and guides to elevate their vibrations further. They are as “real” as you are, but they vibrate at another level and live in another plane of existence.

Usually, Spirt Guides reach you through your dreams and intuition. That quiet voice you hear is often the voice of your teachers and guides. They may also make themselves known through repetitive signs and symbols; they use these to get your attention, so you can discover what they are trying to tell you.

When my Spirit Guides have difficulty getting my attention, they often resort to causing me some physical challenges. The physical problems disappear as soon as I recognize my Guides are trying to reach me, and I understand the message and lessons they are bringing me.

You can have more than one Spirit Guide. I have several, and new ones continue to show up. I trust their process; they are always bringing me guidance and lessons to assist me on my spiritual path.

Some people have archangels and angels as spirit guides. Remember, having an angel appear does not always mean they are your Spirit Guides. Angels can be called in times of distress to assist you for a short time.

Identifying your Spirit Guide

They are always with you, whether you acknowledge their presence. If you want to understand who your guides are, just ask. Start by getting in a quiet meditative space and ask that they reveal themselves to you. Beings from the spiritual realm often communicate through signs and symbols.

Once you ask, you must trust your wisdom. Pay attention to the pictures that appear in your mind. You might see a Native American, a Buddhist monk, or nothing at all. Keep your mind and intuition open. Also, notice if signs, symbols, or messages continue to come up after you ask them to reveal themselves.

Working with your Spirit Guides is a fantastic personal and spiritual growth tool. They dwell in a higher vibrational plane and bring lessons and guidance from other dimensions. You can also ask your Spirit Guides to assist you in physical healing. Before you go to sleep, ask that they do healing work on you.

Life is so much more than what we see. Open your spiritual eyes and hearts, and you will discover a world of wisdom, beauty, and peace you never knew existed. Raise your vibration and allow the beautiful gifts of Spirit to wash over you.
